The Society, in association with the Department of Archaeology, Durham University, is delighted to announce the annual Student Colloquium. The colloquium will will include visits to medieval sites in Durham and to recently excavated sites in the North Pennines.

Pre conference visits to Durham Cathedral and World Heritage site (Dr Pam Graves and Dr David Petts)
Saturday 25th November 2023
Keynotes, posters, paper presentations and workshops
keynote: Eugene Costello, University College Cork Radical Humanities Lab and Department of History. Author: The Colonisation of the uplands in Medieval Britain and Ireland: Climate, Agriculture and Environmental Adaptation (Medieval Archaeology 65:1, 2021).
Sunday 26th November 2023
Field trip to recent collaborative research and community excavations in Upper Teesdale, County Durham (weather permitting):
Hunderthwaite/Romaldkirk Domesday Settlements and Gueswick Hills excavations (2019 and ongoing)
Holwick Well Head, Deserted Medieval Settlement (excavated 2017-2019)
Simy Folds, early medieval upland type site excavated by Coggins, Fairless and Batey 1976-1981.

SMA Student Representative
Each year the Society for Medieval Archaeology invites a student member to take on the role of Student Representative. Student Reps provide a voice for our growing student membership on SMA Council and also help organise our annual SMA Student Colloquium and career workshops. Other roles include the maintenance of our social media platforms and representing the Society at conferences.
