Wiltshire Pottery Type Series – Available Now!
Type series of medieval and post-medieval pottery for Wiltshire (c. 400–1700)
The type series consists of sample sherds of pottery found (but not necessarily made) within the county, and an accompanying database with descriptions of wares and fabrics. It includes, for example, Saxon handmade wares, medieval Laverstock wares from the Salisbury area and post-medieval slip-decorated earthenwares made in Crockerton
This resource is now available to download as a pdf, but it will soon become a searchable database hosted by the Archaeology Data Service. The type series can be downloaded here.
Wiltshire Council will make it a standard requirement to use the type series in pottery reports when undertaking archaeological projects in Wiltshire.
The project has been funded by Historic England and has put to good use the amazing archives cared for by museums across the county.
