November 25th 2022 at 16.00– Prof Steinunn J Kristjánsdóttir (University of Iceland) – ‘Between Man and Nature’

Prof Steinunn Kristjánsdóttir is changing what we know and how we think about medieval Iceland, and its monastic community. Her new project ‘Between Man and Nature’ investigates the interaction between man and nature in monasteries that were run according to the Benedictine rule in Iceland during the Middle Ages. Various aspects of the project will be discussed from plants and medicine, to textile making and book production in the Benedictine houses, all of which demanded a wide range of natural resources and animal husbandry (wool and skin). Prof Kristjánsdóttir will also discuss her new book ‘Monastic Iceland’, which closely follows the rise and fall of medieval monasticism in Iceland.
