Medieval Britain & Ireland Fieldwork Listings

Between 1957 and 2025 Medieval Britain and Ireland (MB&I) collated annual listings of fieldwork that had been undertaken on medieval sites and landscapes in the UK and Éire. These listings are now available as a download-only database via the Archaeology Data Service website here. Here you will also find Fieldwork Listings entries from 2018-2023 that have not been subject to indexing, which you can access as downloadable files for each year in this range. We are thankful to all who submitted their findings to the Fieldwork Listings, and to all past Indexers and Editors who created this valuable and long-lasting resource.
Moving forward, MB&I content will continue to be available in Medieval Archaeology, our peer-reviewed Journal. It will comprise a summary of finds and analyses from the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and a Fieldwork Highlights section reporting on notable discoveries each year. We are keen to include extended and illustrated overviews of fieldwork which has yielded significant results of wider value for readers. From excavation discoveries to standing building studies to aerial imaging and geophysical surveys – anything which has provided new insights into aspects of the early- to late-medieval landscape, both rural and urban. The journal includes up to five of these reports each issue, so if you have a suitable project to report on, we’d love to hear from you!
We are looking for reports of up to 2000 words, with a short supporting bibliography where appropriate, and up to four black and white or colour plates/figures. So, if you have a fieldwork project that fits the bill, please contact our editor for MB&I, Katie Hemer, here.
