AGM and Winter Symposium 2025
The Society for Medieval Archaeology is pleased to announce that our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 1st December 2025 at 12pm. The AGM will be followed by the Winter Symposium – a set of three lectures that focus on new and emerging research in medieval archaeology. Speakers present early findings from projects still in the fieldwork or pre-publication stage, giving Members an exciting opportunity to hear about new research as it is happening.

This year we have three fascinating talks spanning the British Isles. First, Steve Rippon (University of Exeter) will talk about a project exploring the hidden kingdoms of South-West Britain in the 5th to mid-7th centuries and how they interacted with the emerging Anglo-Saxon communities further east. Next, Sam Leggett (University of Edinburgh), Adrián Maldonado and @Jess Thompson (both National Museum of Scotland), Kerry Sayle (SUERC), and Julie Dunne (University of Bristol), will talk about new insights into the people buried at Martyr’s Bay, Iona, revealed by new biomolecular work, osteological assessments and radiocarbon determinations. Finally, Marie-Therese Barrett, Rebecca Boyd and John O’Neill (all IAC Archaeology) and @Jacquie McDowell (DfC Historic Environment Division, Northern Ireland) will present the post-excavation highlights from Drumclay Crannog, one of the most significant medieval sites excavated in Ireland.
Details of how to join the AGM and the Winter Symposium can be found in our Autumn Newsletter, which all Members should have now received. If you have not, please email us for details: medievalarchaeology@gmail.com
We look forward to seeing you!
